The future

This is a part of "The Future".

Series contents:

  1. The future
  2. The future is more less extreme than you think.
  3. The future is something else entirely.

“The future’s shrouded terror lurks / beneath the seen and heard; its visage casts / all shadows, its soft tread the night disturbs.” I wrote that last semester sometime, and those words are coming back to, quite literally, haunt me now. My summer is accounted for, at HoneyRock, but after that, then what?

Steve and I talked about this at lunch the other day; we’re both sick and tired of being asked every time we turn around. We came up with some good “pat” answers for the inevitable “and what are you doing in the Fall?” Here are a select few, plus some new ones I made up:

  • Sea-kayak across the Bering Strait.
  • Corner the market in pork.
  • Walk across the country.
  • Memorize War & Peace.
  • Write the Great American Novel.
  • Join the Peace Corps (which Steve might actually do).
  • Become a human shield in Iraq (or Syria).
  • Push-ups.
  • Eat Altoids.
  • Worry about the future.
  • Drive across the country.
  • Skydive.
  • Worry about the past.
  • Get married. To whom? Dunno. Somebody.
  • Climb every mountain.
  • Sing.
  • And last but not least… Get a job.
