Update on the car.
Update on James’ car: $250 parts and labor to replace the fan belt (and unwind the old one from the fan) and fix some other minor things which James couldn’t remember from the receipt.
Thankfully, the doomsday scenarios didn’t pan out: the head gasket didn’t blow, and the engine block didn’t crack, either of which would have totalled the car (a 1989 Cavalier, fyi). James and I celebrated by playing a round of frisbee golf after lunch.
The moral of the story: check your belts on a regular basis; a brief once-over every time you check your oil is a good rule, a more in-depth survey when you change the oil. Oh yes, and if a belt goes, stop the car and have it towed. You might not be as lucky as James.
