To All Whom It May Concern,
This is the abridged text of a mass-email I just sent out to everyone on my email list. I am recording it here for posterity.
Hello again. Some of you may be new additions to this mass-mail list. If so, welcome—I don’t use this list very often (this would be the second time in four months), but if you want to opt-out, just let me know. Also, the same rules as previously mentioned apply: if you know of someone who’s not on this list and would like to be, let me know, or have them email me. I have many friends for whom I do not have a current email address. If you see an email address that’s not up-to-date, let me know. And by all means, forward this to anyone who might enjoy reading it.
I. Where I’ve Been.
There. I think that’s all the housekeeping. Now, on to the good stuff. It’s been awhile since I’ve updated anyone on my circumstances, and since people are starting to ask, let me do so. Firstly, it’s been a great summer, and HoneyRock (for those out of the loop, that’s the camp I’ve been working at as archery instructor) has been good to me. I have gone from knowing absolutely nothing about archery to being able to shoot and teach at a Masters level (HoneyRock-speak for “yeah, he’s pretty good”). Working with kids all summer, my first real experience of any kind with the goobers, has been a blast. This summer hasn’t been as hot as last year, and there hasn’t been as much rain, and it’s just been a good time all around.
Secondly, the 2003 Tower yearbook isn’t finished yet, but it’s not anything I could have done anything about—our publisher has been dragging their heels on something, so I’ve just been taking care of what I can, and waiting. I’m talking with Steve, the yearbook’s advisor, about how to get the 2003 book finished, how to get 2004 off to a better start, and how in general to make things run a little smoother so that future editors aren’t stuck with so much work to do come summer. We’ll see how that goes. In summary: some frustration, but oh well; it’s been fun. If you know of any editing positions coming open next May, let me know.
II. Where I’m Going (or, Perhaps, Not Going).
Now, on to the question everyone’s been dying to ask: what am I doing in the Fall? Well, through a serendipitous series of events, word got to the right people in camp that, on top of enjoying working on cars and teaching archery, I’m also a fair hand at computers. So, the very week in which I was just starting to get worried (silly me) about where I would live in the Fall, and more importantly, where I would be getting the money to start making payments on my loans, Rob Codding (Director of Operations here on camp) offered me a job as Camp Computer Guy. The actual title’s a bit more impressive, but I forget exactly what it is right now, and that’s what it boils down to, anyway. After a bit of thought (and after everyone I ran the idea past got really excited), I accepted the offer.
Therefore, I will be staying at HoneyRock through at least the Spring, working with computers and the camp network (and helping to build the new operations center, and doing housekeeping, and doing the dishes, and probably five other things). As well, I plan to do more canoeing, hiking, camping, and cross-country skiing than I’ve managed to do so far. I’m quite excited to see all the seasons up here in the Northwoods of Wiconsin, and after the Chicago winters, I figure I’ve graduated to the next level (40 below, here I come!). The only bad news I’ve heard so far is that my office can get a bit cool in the winter (cool as in 50s-60s—not quite a shirtsleeve environment). Yes, you heard correctly: I will have an office of my very own, affectionately known on camp as “the Cave”. An office of my own is worth the extra layer of warm clothing.
III. What You Can Do About It.
I put my contact info in the email version of this. If you want to know how to send me stuff, or call me, or visit me, then just drop me an email.
IV. In Which Our Hero Makes His Daring Escape.
Okay, that’s it. I’ve reached my goal of writing this update email within the space and time allotted. Now I just need to send it, and then I’ll be off to dinner, and then the staff is watching over at Bodnar’s apartment. I pray everyone this reaches is doing well, and that everyone has as good a Fall, Winter, and Spring as I’m planning to have. Write me, say hello, and have yourselves a good ol’ time.
Peace,
David Eyk
