Pull the wires from the wall.
Feeling vaguely anti-technology today. Struggled with Windows XP and its hired thugs (i.e. Dreamweaver MX) all morning. At the same time, thinking about the Technology Orientations I have to give to staff today. Why do we have all this technology here at HoneyRock, when we’re trying to be a “Place Apart”? Heck if I know. Oh, no, wait—they’re useful tools. That’s right. Nevermind they demand our attention, and pull us away from the people around us. It’s a small price to pay for… email, and WYSIWYG desktop publishing.
Query: how can we turn technology into a means to community (and I mean local community, not this Infobahn Strip-mall community) instead of an end in competition with community? Technology is already starting to become Just Another Cultural Object, one which we can pick up and put down and make jokes about, but it still fascinates us too darn much.
Pull the wires from the wall. Step outside and breathe the fresh air.
