An odd dream.

I had a strange dream last night, strange mainly for the vivid clarity with which I remember it, as I rarely ever remember my dreams, even vaguely. But it also seems strangely symbolic for some reason. Any Josephs in the crowd? Anyway, here it is:

I was in the yearbook office at Wheaton College, except I think it was the new office, with tables along two walls across from each other, an administrative desk, and shelving on the wall next to the desk. There were several fish tanks in the room–three or four on the shelves, one or two on the desk, and another on the other side of the room on the table. I was on the phone with someone, and was expecting a delivery.

When the delivery came, it was three computers (all Apple, since that’s what the yearbook uses), including a fancy new G4 and two old Quadras (I remember looking at the front plates). We set the computers on the tables in various spots. One of the Quadras was set down next to the lone fish tank.

While I was inspecting the Quadra, I noticed the odd arrangement of the fish tank. The water level was fairly shallow and the tank had been divided neatly into three equal pools by what looked like water-worn sticks and driftwood. The right division had the usual sort of fish-tank greenery around it. In the left-most pool were two long, white fish with odd growths coming from their snouts, like thick and stubby catfish whiskers. I had the vague impression that they were predator-fish. Between the two of them, they took up most of the room in their pool and couldn’t move much at all.

In the middle pool there was a solitary goldfish. In the rightmost pool there were two more goldfish, more or less identical to the middlemost. As I was watching, one of the predator-fish launched itself across the driftwood barrier into the middle pool and then under the plants and driftwood into the rightmost pool, where there was much thrashing about. Both the goldfish disappeared in the fray, and shortly the white predator-fish leaped over into the middle tank. Thinking I should intervene, I went looking for a net or something to scoop up the goldfish and save them. I looked in each of the other tanks, noting the kinds of fish that were there, but I found no net or scoop. Returning to the lone tank, I discovered a goldfish on the floor, flopping quite purposefully away from me and trying to get under the bed (at this point, I think the dream-office was starting to merge with a dream-bedroom). I scooped up the fish in my hand and it squirmed with all its fishy might. I went to the tank to put it back in, thinking to save it from drowning in air. But when I put it in the water, it was dead, and so were all the other fish. They were all back in their original pools, only now floating at the surface with their glassy eyes staring back up into the air.

Then I woke up.
