Yesterday I was playing frisbee golf on campus. After playing the course, we were shooting a couple of holes just for fun. While walking up to my second drive, I saw a squirrel frolicking in the grass beside my disc, which had landed next to a small tree in the center of the quad. Feeling mischievous, I tossed my putter, fully expecting it to run away. It didn’t, and the putter, of course, landed right on top of it. Exit one squirrel, right? In its panic, instead of fleeing from the source of danger (me), it immediately treed itself in the aforementioned small tree. Lucky for it, I was tired, and not naturally inclined to the torture of small animals. We had a good laugh at its expense, though.
Were that my only run-in with a squirrel in the past 48 hours, then now would be a good time to mention that I then found twenty dollars. However, this is not that kind of story. Rather, it is a story of mystery, intrigue, and strange coincidences. You see, this afternoon, as I walked out of Anderson Commons after work, I grew disgusted with my tepid tea (be warned: the darjeeling tea from Bon Appetit tasteth of fish). Having still a third of my mug full (or two-thirds empty), I simply walked over to the side of the entrance to throw the rest into the trees and bushes over there… and thoroughly shock another squirrel (or could it have been the same one? They all look alike…), which had been pleasantly sunning itself on a low branch. It chittered and ran off, dripping tepid, fishy darjeeling tea, utterly disgusted with the insanities of human civilization.
So I thought to myself, “Huh, what have I got against squirrels? Is this some sort of passive-aggressive trait bubbling to the surface? Did a squirrel insult my mother when I was young, and now I’m acting out my anger against them? Perhaps I hold a deep-seated prejudice against squirrel-kind that I have never dealt with? Or is it simply a coincidence, happenstance, a pair of “random occurrences”:http://newstalk.eykd.net/oldspeak/2005/01/19/randomness/ having no connection with any other facet of my life?”
Now, to tell you the truth, I wish I had just found twenty dollars. Oh well.
