Serenity.

On Saturday, I went and saw Serenity. The audio cut out for about fifteen minutes during the first half, so we all got free movie passes at the end.

On Sunday, I went and saw Serenity again.

If I had $9.50 to spare, I would have gone and seen it again yesterday. Likewise, today. When The Matrix came out, I saw it in the theaters at least five times–a real record for me. Of course, back then, I was paying 6.50 for full-price, 3.50 for matinee. Times change, and monopolies charge rent. I wish I could afford to beat that old record of mine right now.

Before I go any further, let me say: you should see this movie. You may or may not like it, but you should at least see it. This kind of sf movie needs to be made, if we’re going to make sf movies at all.

I’ve been trying to sort through my feelings over Serenity the movie and Firefly the series. I’ve found myself trying to explain it to people the last few days, usually people who have never heard of it. I’ve been getting a lot of nodding heads and glazed eyes.

Just now, I read this article by Orson Scott Card, which puts into words everything I’ve been feeling. Card is one of my heroes, and he’s gone and raised my estimation of him. Card says that Serenity is the best sf movie ever made, and, after reading through his reasoning twice, I’m inclined to agree with him. This is a movie that has never been made before, not in this way, not combining these elements.

I’ll stop rambling now. Go see it. It’s weighty. It’s moving. It’s action-packed. It’s downright hilarious, simultaneously sad and triumphant. The villains are terrible in their humanity; the heroes are glorious in their humility. Go see it.
